The GMU campus in suburban Virginia is home to the ambitious Center for the Arts, a glittering complex. Music, ballet, and drama performances regularly take place in the 1,900-seat concert hall, the 500-seat proscenium Harris Theater, and the intimate 150-seat Black Box Theater. Also on campus is the 9,500-seat Patriot Center, site of pop acts and sporting events.

Any search for cultured entertainment should start here, whether you want to see an international symphony orchestra, a troupe of dancers, a Broadway musical, engaging children's theater, or a comedic whodunit. The "KenCen" is actually five stages under one roof: the Concert Hall, home of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO); the 2,200-seat Opera House, the setting for ballet, modern dance, opera, and large-scale musicals; the Eisenhower Theater, usually used for drama; the Terrace Theater, a Philip Johnson--designed space that showcases chamber groups and experimental works; and the Theater Lab, home to cabaret-style performances. You can also catch a free performance every evening at 6 PM on the Millennium Stage in the center's Grand Foyer.

In addition to being the home of the Washington Capitals hockey and Washington Wizards basketball teams, this 19,000-seat arena also hosts many concerts, ice-skating events, and the circus. Parking can be a problem, but the arena is conveniently situated near several Metro lines.

The In Series at this small, women's liberal arts college presents music, performance art, theater, classical music, and dance companies in the fall and spring. Past participants in the dance series have included the troupes of Robert Small, Nancy Meehan, and Gus Solomons Jr. The college's intimate Hand Chapel is the setting for rarely produced chamber operas September--June.

Free concerts by the National Gallery Orchestra, conducted by George Manos, and performances by visiting recitalists and ensembles are held in the venerable West Building's West Garden Court on Sunday evening from October to June. Most performances highlight classical music, though April's American Music Festival often features jazz. Entry is first-come, first-served.

Cellar Door Productions, the country's largest concert promoter, built its own 25,000-seat venue in 1995. In rural Virginia, about an hour from downtown Washington, the pavilion hosts all types of music.

The Smithsonian presents a rich assortment of music, some of it free. Jazz, musical theater, and popular standards are performed in the National Museum of American History. In the third-floor Hall of Musical Instruments, musicians periodically play historic instruments from the museum's collection. In warm weather, shows are held in the courtyard between the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of American Art. The Smithsonian Associates Program offers everything from a cappella groups to Cajun zydeco bands; many perform in the National Museum of Natural History's Baird Auditorium.

Just off the Dulles Toll Road, about a half hour from downtown, Wolf Trap is the only national park dedicated to the performing arts. On its grounds is the Filene Center, an outdoor theater that hosts pop, jazz, opera, ballet, and dance performances each June through September. On performance nights, Metrorail operates a $3.50 round-trip shuttle bus between the West Falls Church Metro station and the Filene Center. The fare is exact change only, and the bus leaves 20 minutes after the show, or no later than 11 PM, whether the show is over or not.
