| The
city is justly proud of its Old Post Office Pavilion, a
handsome shopping center in an historic 19th-century
building. In addition to a dozen food vendors, there are
17 shops. The observation deck in the building's clock
tower has an excellent view of the city. Metro: Federal

| Near
the hub of the Georgetown shopping district, at the
intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, is this
tri-level mall, which looks like a Victorian ice-cream
parlor inside. At this posh place, the pricey clothing
and accessory boutiques and the ubiquitous chain stores
(such as Victoria's Secret), as well as the upscale toy
store FAO Schwarz, draw international visitors in
droves. Next door is a branch of Dean & Deluca, New
York's premier gourmet food store. Metro: Foggy Bottom. |

| This
delightful shopping enclave is resplendent with marble
floors and gilded, vaulted ceilings. It's now both a
working train station and a mall with three levels---one
with food stands and a cinema multiplex---of stores and,
appropriately, the Great Train Store, which sells train
memorabilia and toy versions from the inexpensive to
four-figure Swiss models. The east hall, reminiscent of
London's Covent Garden, is filled with vendors of
expensive and ethnic wares in open stalls. Christmas is
an especially pleasant time to shop here. Metro: Union
Station. |
