Washington, DC

Across from Mazza Gallerie is the newer, similarly upscale Chevy Chase Pavilion. Its exclusive women's clothing stores include Joan & David and Steilmann European Selection (which carries Karl Lagerfeld's sportier KL line). Other specialty shops of note here are Pottery Barn and Country Road Australia. Metro: Friendship Heights.

Mazza Gallerie
5300 Wisconsin Ave. NW
Washington, DC
Phone 202 - 9666114
The four-level Mazza Gallerie is anchored by the ritzy Neiman Marcus department store and the discount department store Filene's Basement. Other stores include Williams-Sonoma's kitchenware and Villeroy & Boch housewares as well as branches of Ann Taylor and Pampillonia Jewelers. Metro: Friendship Heights.
Old Post Office Pavilion
1100 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington, DC
Phone 202 - 2894224
The city is justly proud of its Old Post Office Pavilion, a handsome shopping center in an historic 19th-century building. In addition to a dozen food vendors, there are 17 shops. The observation deck in the building's clock tower has an excellent view of the city. Metro: Federal Triangle.

Shops at Georgetown Park
3222 M St. NW
Washington, DC
Phone 202 - 2985577
Near the hub of the Georgetown shopping district, at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, is this tri-level mall, which looks like a Victorian ice-cream parlor inside. At this posh place, the pricey clothing and accessory boutiques and the ubiquitous chain stores (such as Victoria's Secret), as well as the upscale toy store FAO Schwarz, draw international visitors in droves. Next door is a branch of Dean & Deluca, New York's premier gourmet food store. Metro: Foggy Bottom.

Shops at National Place
13th and F Sts. NW
Washington, DC
Phone 202 - 6621250
The Shops takes up three levels, one of which is devoted to food stands. Although the stores are mainly youth-oriented, Perfumania and clothing stores such as Casual Corner and August Max have branches here, too. Metro: Metro Center.

Union Station
Massachusetts Ave. NE near N. Capitol St.
Washington, DC
Phone 202 - 3719441
This delightful shopping enclave is resplendent with marble floors and gilded, vaulted ceilings. It's now both a working train station and a mall with three levels---one with food stands and a cinema multiplex---of stores and, appropriately, the Great Train Store, which sells train memorabilia and toy versions from the inexpensive to four-figure Swiss models. The east hall, reminiscent of London's Covent Garden, is filled with vendors of expensive and ethnic wares in open stalls. Christmas is an especially pleasant time to shop here. Metro: Union Station.
